Mount Royal
One of the best things to do in Montreal, Mont-Royal mountain has the most amazing view of the city. The view is well worth the walk up there, but if you’re not a big walker, you can also drive. The best view is from Mont Royal Chalet. Once you’ve soaked in the city views, this expansive city park has plenty of lush walking trails and picnic spots to enjoy.
Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal
After exploring Mont-Royal, walk down to Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount-Royal. This catholic sanctuary was founded in 1904, and receives over 2 million visitors each year. From here, you can see panoramic views of Montreal, and you can also check out the votive chapel containing 10,000 candles, the Oratory Museum and the Crypt Church.
Explore Old Montreal
This beautiful part of Montreal is not to be missed! Originally established in the 17th century, it’s full of narrow cobblestoned streets. Old Montreal is one of the best places to stay in Montreal as it’s so scenic and surrounded by lots of great shops and cafes. Go to Olive + Gourmando or Le Carter for brunch, and grab a Crème Brûlée crepe from Muru Crêpe. Be sure to visit the Notre-Dame Basilica while you’re in the area (more on this below).
Notre-Dame Basilica
Located in Old Montreal, Montreal’s oldest Catholic church is known for its impressive and intricate interior. Inside, the stained glass windows of the church chronicle the history of the city.
Artwater market
A foodies dream, Atwater Market is full of amazing cheeses, meats, baked goods and fresh produce. Enjoy exploring the market stalls and stock up on supplies for a picnic.
Mary Queen of the World Cathedral
Located in in Montréal’s downtown core, Mary Queen of the World Cathedral is the third largest church in Québec (Saint Joseph’s Oratory and the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré being the first and second largest). This ornate Renaissance cathedral was built at the end of the 19th century and the design was based on St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The cathedral covers nearly 4,700 square meters and is built in the shape of a Latin cross, topped by a green copper dome.
Saint-Laurent Boulevard
Take a walk along one of Montreal’s most famous streets and check out the check out the graffiti from local artists. If you’re in visiting Montreal over summer, there’s often something exciting happening on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, between Maisonneuve Boulevard and Saint-Viateur. From artists painting the alleyways, to street fairs and delicious food, this part of Montreal is not to be missed.
Quartier des Spectacles
For an afternoon or evening out, head to Montreal’s go-to district for entertainment and cultural events. It’s also the main site for a lot of the city’s festivals. During the summer, there are some great events happening like the world’s largest International Jazz Festival, and the Just for Laughs comedy festival.
