7 Best Things to See & Do in Broome

Cable Beach Broome Sunset

If you’ve been thinking about exploring more of Western Australia, Broome is definitely worth adding to your list to visit! From beautiful beaches to scenic day tours and must-try food spots, here are the best things to see and do in Broome.

Where’s the best place to stay in Broome? We’d recommend splitting your time up between few nights on the Cable Beach side (so you can catch those amazing sunsets!) and a few nights near Chinatown or Town Beach. The Mangrove Hotel is a great option for this area, as it’s walking distance to both Chinatown, which has lots of great food options, and Town Beach. It’s also one of the best locations to watch the Staircase to the Moon (more on this below).

Best Things to Do in Broome

Cable Beach Broome Sunset

Watch a Sunset at Cable Beach

One of the best things to do in Broome is completely free! Heading to Cable Beach for a sunset is an absolute must. The sunsets here are beautiful and look different almost every night, so definitely try and catch a few whilst you’re in Broome! Cable Beach is beautiful at all times of the day, so be sure to head there for a morning walk or afternoon swim too.

Broome Staircase to the Moon

See the Staircase to the Moon

This rare phenomenon happens on a few dates each month from March to October. During a low tide, when the moon rises over the mudflats at Roebuck Bay, it creates a beautiful staircase-like effect. If you’re in Broome during this time, it’s definitely worth watching! You can find the Broome Staircase to the Moon dates here.

Horizontal Falls

Visit Horizontal Falls

If you have a day to spare, a tour to Horizontal Falls is definitely worth doing! The Horizontal Falls have been described by David Attenborough as “one of the greatest wonders of the natural world”.  Many of the tours include a scenic Seaplane flight over the Falls and surrounding areas, and a boat cruise. We did the tour by Horizontal Falls Adventures, and it was great!

The Horizontal Falls, located within Talbot Bay, are a unique natural phenomenon where tidal flows cause waterfalls on the ebb and flow of each tide. The falls form when water rushes through two short and narrow gorges. The water builds up on one side faster than it can flow through them, forming a waterfall up to 4 metres high. The direction of the falls reverses with each change of the tide.

Willie Creek Pearl Farm

Do a Pearl Farm Tour

The home of the South Sea Pearl, Broome was once the largest Pearling Port in the world. As a result, there are some great Pearl Farms you can visit that produce some of the world’s finest and largest pearls. There’s so much to learn about Broome’s pearl farming history, and a pearl farm tour is a great way to learn about it. We took a tour to Willie Creek pear farm which was a great experience. There’s also the Pearl Lugger museum in Broome where you can learn more about Broome’s interesting pearling past.

Sun Pictures Cinema Broome

Watch a Movie at Sun Pictures

End the evening with a movie at the oldest operating outdoor picture theatre in the world, Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a Broome icon, and is definitely worth a visit. Watch a movie under the stars as you sit back in the deck chairs and soak up the atmosphere with some popcorn. Be sure to bring a blanket if it’s a colder night.

Broome Courthouse Markets

Visit the Broome Courthouse Markets

On Saturday mornings (and some Thursday evenings), the Courthouse markets are on. There’s lots of great local offerings, with everything from arts and crafts, to jewellery and coffee. Come hungry, as there’s some great food trucks to eat from.

Best Broome Food

Spend a morning in Chinatown

With a mix of Colonial and Asian architecture, Chinatown is Broome’s main shopping district. Stop by Dragonfly cafe (pictured above) or Green Mango for brunch, before taking a stroll along the local shops. Short St cafe (across the road from Dragonfly cafe) is a great spot for a coffee and baked treats (try the Basque cheesecake if they have it!). There’s also an abundance of pearl showrooms that you can enjoy browsing.

Matso's Brewery Broome

Have a Drink at Matso’s Brewery

If you’re a fan of Matso’s Ginger Beer, you need to visit the Matso’s Brewery in Broome. Book a table on the verandah, order a tasting paddle and some food, and sit back and enjoy the live music and good vibes.

Cable Beach Broome

Relax & Recharge

Last of all, Broome is amazing for a bit of R&R time! Relaxing with a good book by the pool or going for a pre-sunset swim at the beach is the best way to spend the afternoon. Things really do seem to run a bit slower in Broome, so take some extra time to yourself.

Hopefully this list of the best things to do in Broome helps you to make the most out of your time there. Happy travels, and enjoy your time in Broome!
