The Nine Streets

Situated in the middle of of the canal belt in Jordaan, these quirky streets are full of great cafes, chic boutiques and vintage finds. If you have limited time in Amsterdam, the Nine Streets are a must-visit, and are also where some of the prettiest canals are located. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the canals, stopping at some cafes and shops along the way. For coffee, stop by Screaming Beans, and for freshly baked croissants, go to Bussia. If you can brave the line, grab some cookies from Van Stapele, and if you’re in the mood for brunch, go to Ree7.

Anne Frank House 

The house where Anne Frank, her family and four others hid from the Nazis is located right near the Nine Streets. The Anne Frank House is now a museum and exhibition, and you can visit the ‘secret annexe’ where Anne and the others lived for two years, before being discovered. This is one of the most important historical sites in the world and is definitely worth a visit.

 

Rijksmuseum

If you only have time to visit one museum in Amsterdam, make it the Rijksmuseum. Situated in a beautiful Gothic and Renaissance building, it houses  a magnificent collection of Dutch masterworks from the Golden Age. The museum has an app which offers guided tours, which is a great way to make your way around the museum. If you’re feeling hungry, there’s both a cafe and Michelin-starred restaurant.

 

Foodhallen

Speaking of hungry, you can take your pick from so many great food options at Foodhallen. You’ll find everything from Mexican, to baked treats and dim sum. This old tram depot in Oud-West’s is now a trendy spot full of food stalls and bars. Make sure you go with a big appetite!

Van Gogh Museum

If you’re wanting to explore another museum, the Van Gogh Museum houses the largest collection of Vincent Van Gogh’s works in the world. Just around the corner from the Rijksmuseum, it’s situated in a beautiful Gerrit Rietveld-designed building.

 

Vondelpark

A great spot for your morning run or walk, Vondelpark is walking distance from the centre of Amsterdam. This public park is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic and some fresh air. Be sure to visit the rose garden and look out for a show at the air theatre.

 

Artis Zoo

The Artis Zoo is one of the oldest in Europe, and it’s a great way to spend half a day in Amsterdam. It’s a nice walk along the canals from the centre of Amsterdam, or if you’re not up for a walk you can take the tram to the Artis stop.

If you’re looking for some of the best views of Amsterdam, the 22 story A’dam Tower offers a beautiful view of the waterfront. Enjoy the view with a cocktail in hand at the Skybar, or soak up your surroundings on the observation deck. Here, you’ll find Europe’s highest swing, where you can admire the views as you swing backwards and forwards. 

 

NDSM Wharf

This trendy spot is a former shipyard that is now home to an array of bars and restaurants. It’s situated on the the northern banks of the IJ and can be accessed by a free ferry from Centraal. Head here to enjoy some food and drinks on the beach. There’s also a flea market that runs once a month, and there’s often an exhibition or event happening.

Take a walk down this street-length market and pick up some delicious food, quirky clothes and other trinkets. There’s plenty of options for lunch or a snack, and it’s a great spot to soak up the atmosphere.

Our Amsterdam to-do list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Red Light District. At night, you can walk through the street lined with women in red-lit shop windows. It’s one of Amsterdam’s oldest neighbourhoods.
