When thinking about luxury beauty brands, La Mer always comes to mind. Their Crème de La Mer moisturizer has a cult following and a long list of celebrity fans, along with a high price tag!
The journey of La Mer began when an aerospace physicist, Dr. Max Huber, suffered burns in a lab accident. Following the accident, he sought to heal his burns and spent 12 years hoping to unlock the healing powers of the sea. 6,000 experiments later, he eventually discovered a fermentation process that transformed sea kelp, eucalyptus, wheat germ, vitamins, minerals and other pure ingredients, into the elixir at the heard of La Mer products, their Miracle Broth.
The Miracle Broth is made with several different types of seaweed, the primary version being a high quality giant kelp called Macrosys pyrifera. It’s harvested it by hand, put it on ice, and shipped the same day to New York where it’s then fermented. La Mer’s signature fermentation process takes 3 to 4 months and uses light and sound energy to enhance the activity of sea kelp, vitamins, minerals and other pure ingredients.
Whilst the Crème de La Mer is often considered one of the best La Mer products, the brand offers a range of different skincare and makeup products. At the heart of all of La Mer’s formulations is their Miracle Broth. The fermented Miracle Broth is anti-inflammatory and can help to reduce puffiness, irritation, and redness in the skin.

Why is La Mer so expensive?
Ingredients are key when it comes to skincare, and La Mer’s Miracle Broth is at the heart of all their skincare products. One of the reasons La Mer is so expensive is due to the process of formulating their Miracle Broth.
The Miracle Broth is made with several different types of seaweed, the primary ingredient being Macrosys pyrifera, a high quality giant that contains kelpiodine, potassium, and a host of other vitamins and minerals. Along with sea kelp, there’s a range of other pure ingredients that form part of the Miracle Broth.
La Mer’s base at Vancouver Island hand-harvests the kelp, places it on ice, and ships it the same day to New York to begin the fermentation process. La Mer is also formulated with the rind of an antioxidant-rich lime, and these fresh limes are peeled by hand.
The fermentation process in very unique, taking 3 to 4 months to complete. Every time the Miracle Broth is created, it is infused with drops from the batch that was made before it.
Within eight hours of completion, each jar of Crème de la Mer is filled by hand in a temperature-controlled room.
