New York is such a big city with so much to see and do. You could easily spend weeks here and not experience all the amazing things this city has to offer. Planning your trip to NYC can be daunting, so we’ve rounded up the best things to see and do in New York below.
Central Park
A slice of paradise in amongst the bustling city, Central Park is one of the best things to do in NYC. With over 700 acres of man-made gardens, there are so many paths to explore. Take a long walk through the park past the various sculptures, fountains, arches, and even a zoo. Central Park is open 6 am to 1 am daily.
Brooklyn Bridge
Opened in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge links Brooklyn and Manhattan, and it also provides some spectacular views. No trip to NYC would be complete without a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park. From here, you can get a great view of the city skyline. Grab a bite to eat at Time Out Market before heading back over the bridge.
The High Line
The High Line is an old elevated railway line that has now been transformed into a public park and walkway. You can start at the entrance on West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues, and walk down to the Chelsea Market for some lunch (be sure to check out Los Tacos). Whilst you’re walking, you’ll see some great views of the Hudson River and New York City skyline, along with artwork and seasonal food vendors.
Smorgasburg
A foodies dream, Smorgasburg food market is not to be missed. Around 100 local vendors set up eery weekend from April through to October. You can find the food markets on Fridays at WTC, Saturdays in Williamsburg and Sundays in Prospect Park. There’s so many amazing food options to choose from here, so be sure to come hungry!
Times Square
A night time walk through colourful Times Square is a must-do in NYC. Times Square is known for its flashing billboards, but there’s also plenty of shops and restaurants. See a Broadway show, and take a walk through Times Square afterwards.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
NYC’s most visited museum, here you can experience some incredible art from around the world. There are often some great exhibits on, and permanent collection is very extensive too. Even if you’re not going inside, be sure to walk past and check out the Gothic-Revival-style building and the iconic tiered steps. It’s located right near Central Park.
Rockefeller Center and Top of the Rock
If you’re looking for some of the best views in New York, be sure to visit the Top of the Rock Observation Deck. Located on the 67th, 69th and 70th floors of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, it offers panoramic 360-degree views of New York. Outside the building, you’ll find a large skating rink along with lots of shops and eateries.
Grand Central Terminal
A New York icon, Grand Central Terminal is one of the top things to do in New York City. This train terminal in Midtown, opened in 1913, is now a world-famous landmark. Not only a train terminal, you’ll also find many shops and restaurants (be sure to check out the Apple store). Make sure you walk past the opal-faced clock located above the Information Booth, and the Whispering Gallery, located in front of the Oyster Bar and Restaurant.
Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is a must-see sight in NYC due to its 360 degree views of Midtown. The observation decks are on the 86th and 102nd floors, and are are open daily from 10am to 12am. If it’s a clear day, you can see up to 6 states. There is also now a museum you can visit on the 2nd floor, which is included in the cost of your ticket. Pick up the multimedia tour to be guided through the exhibits and views, and gain some additional background on the history of the Empire State Building.
New York Public Library
The New York Public Library is a National Historic Landmark that contains more than six million books. You’ll recognise it by the two marble lions next to the entrance. The inside is just as impressive as the outside, so make sure you take a walk through the library and admire the beautiful architecture. Swing by Bryant Park, just outside, before you leave the area.
9/11 Memorial and Museum
The National September 11 Memorial remembers the 2,983 people killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993, along with those who risked their lives to save others.
Broadway
A trip to NYC wouldn’t bee complete without seeing a Broadway show. Walk through Times Square in the evening on the way to your show. There’s always plenty of amazing ones to see!
