Explore Gamla Stan

Walking around Gamla Stan, otherwise known as the Old Town, is an absolute must-do when visiting Stockholm. It dates back to the 1200s and is full of cobblestone streets and colourful buildings. It’s packed with great restaurants, boutiques and a whole lot of charm.

Be sure to visit Stortorget, one of the most well-known squares in Stockholm, which is surrounded by colourful houses. In Gamla Stan you’ll also find the Stockholm Cathedral and Royal Palace.

Tour The Royal Palace

Near Gamla Stan you’ll find the Royal Palace, the official home of the Swedish monarch family. The more than 600 rooms span over 11 floors, and it’s open all year round. You can tour the impressive staterooms, which contain some beautiful artworks.

Visit City Hall

The City Hall is the place where the Nobel Banquets are held each year, and it’s definitely worth a visit. Along with touring the halls (make sure you check out the Blue Hall), you can get a beautiful view over Stockholm from the adjoining 106-meter high tower. The tower is open from May to September.

Take a stroll in the Royal National City Park

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city in the Royal National City Park, also known as Ekoparken. Take a leisurely stroll through the 6 miles of greenery and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Relax in Kungsträdgården

Another great park to relax in is Kungsträdgården. It’s located where once the royal gardens were. In the summertime you can enjoy a coffee at one of the outdoor cafes, and if you’re visiting in winter, have some fun our on the ice-skating rink.

Visit the Vasa Museum

The Vasa Museum is located on Djurgården island, and it’s where you can view a 17th century ship that was salvaged from the bottom of the ocean. The entire museum was built around this ship, and it’s definitely worth a visit if you can fit it in. You’ll learn ll about the ship’s history, why it sank, and how it was salvaged.

See the Photography at Fotografiska

Fotografiska is a photograph lovers heaven. It’s one of the largest photography museums in the world, and displays contemporary works from both local and international photographers. You’ll find it located in an old industrial building on the island of Södermalm.

Sample the Food at Östermalms Saluhall

You’ll find Stockholm’s most famous market in the Östermalm district. Here you’ll find everything from your grocery staples like fresh fruits, vegetables and meat, to delicious cheeses, pastries coffee and seafood. Dine at one of the restaurants there, or sit on one of the chairs outside and graze on your food purchases. Either way, make sure you come hungry!

Admire the Metro Art

One of the best things to do in Stockholm lies underground, in the metro system! As you’re hopping on and off the metro, stay on the lookout for the metro art, which is said to be the longest art exhibition in the world. Whilst not all of the stations have art exhibitions inside, many of them do, and you’ll probably come across them as you make your way through the city.

Explore Södermalm

Södermalm is where you can enjoy some of the best views of the city, and it’s a great area to walk around and explore. It’s full of boutiques, cafes, restaurants and galleries. Head to the Skinnarviksberget, the highest point in Stockholm, for some great views.
