The Grand Place
If you only see one thing in Brussels, make it the Grand Place. This Unesco-listed cobblestoned square is stunning and is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Brussels. It’s surrounded by gilded guildhalls that were once the headquarters of the city’s merchants. Most of the buildings here date back to the late 1600s, although there are some that have been around since the 1200s. If you’re wanting a great photo spot in Brussels, be sure to get here early! Once you’re ready to leave, check out the Manneken Pis nearby (more on this below).
View from the Mont des Arts
The Mont des Arts separates the upper and lower parts of Brussels, and is home to a number of artistic activities, from concerts at Bozar to exhibitions at the Royal Museums of the Fine Arts. There’s so much to do here, but the best part is just enjoying the view.
Palais Royal
Although the royal family of Belgium don’t live here, the Royal Palace in Brussels remains as the King’s administrative residence and main office. The palace is only open to the public in the summer months, but is definitely worth a visit if it’s open when you’re in the city. Admire the grand paintings and tapestries whilst you’re walking around the palace.
Notre Dame Du Sablon
Originally used as a chapel in the 14th Century, this stunning Gothic cathedral is one of the top attractions in Brussels. It used to house a Madonna statue inside, which had supposed healing powers. The statue has since been stolen, but there’s a model of the statue inside the building.
Le Botanique
Historically the botanical gardens of the city, the greenhouse now regularly hosts a range of performing arts. The surrounding gardens are a peaceful change of scenery from the city, and a great spot for an afternoon walk.
The Old England Building
Formerly a department store, the Old England Building now houses a musical museum. Even if you don’t go inside and check out the thousands of musical instruments, it’s worth a visit just to marvel at the architecture. There’s also a cafe on the roof that offers some great views of the city.
Manneken Pis
When you’re leaving the Grand Place, make your way to the Manneken Pis statue close by. The 2-foot-tall peeing boy statue has risen to fame and has become a tourist attraction over the years. It was made in 1619 and has been stolen several times over the years. The current version is from around the early 17th Century and was designed by Jerome Duquesnoy.
Parc Du Cinquantenaire
A must-see in Brussels, the Parc Du Cinquantenaire is a great place to go for a walk or enjoy a picnic. The Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History is also located here. Inside you can access the park’s Arc de Triomphe for some great panoramic views.
Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula
This Gothic cathedral is a stunning building that’s nearly 600 years old. It may remind you of the Notre Dame in Paris, as its architecture is typical of the French Gothic style. When inside, you’ll find some beautiful Gothic and Baroque chapels, along with intricate stained glass windows.
Try the waffles
Having a waffle is an absolute must-do when in Brussels! The best waffles in Brussels are from Maison Dandoy. They’ve been around since 1829, so they know a thing or two about waffles! There’s a few locations around, but the one on Rue Charles Buls is the best, as there’s an upstairs tearoom where you can sit and enjoy your waffle.
