Over the years I’ve come to learn that the most effective wardrobe is definiltey the capsule wardrobe. Countless times I have looked upon racks and racks of clothes and found nothing to wear. If this sounds familiar, your wardrobe is in need of a cull prior to embracing the capsule wardrobe. Can’t bear to give away some old favourites? Fashion marketplace Shedd is one of my favourite ways to get rid of unwanted pieces whilst making some money to put towards new things (more on this later)!
Below are the categories of pieces you want to hang on to for a basic capsule wardrobe (keep it to a max of 1-2 pieces per category). These pieces are timeless wardrobe staples and can be mixed and matched for countless looks.
Good basics are the foundations of any wardrobe. Invest in high quality fabrics in neutral colours like grey, black or white.
The White Shirt
Button down shirts are great because they can be dressed up or down so they’re perfect for both work and weekend attire.
Always a classic, opt for a Little Black Dress in a simple and classic style that can be dressed up with heels for a night out or pared back with sneakers for daytime.
Invest in a pair of jeans that fit perfectly and find a style that you love, whether this be boyfriend, straight, flared, skinny or otherwise.
Opt for a simple and practical skirt in a neutral colour that can be dressed up or down. I personally love midi skirts because they can also be worn in between seasons and not just in the warmer months.
To get more wear out of a knit, look for a lightweight style that you can also wear in between seasons.
The Leather Jacket
One of my all-time favourite pieces in my wardrobe, a leather jacket has a way of always bringing a look together. Invest in a classic style that you can wear for years.
The Winter Coat
A must for the colder months, look for a neutral colour that can be paired with anything.
Now that we’ve pulled out our capsule wardrobe essentials, you should be left with a pile of clothing you no longer need. For older and well-loved items, donate these to a thrift store or give them away to a friend.
However, if a piece is new or in great condition, selling your clothes is a great way to cull your wardrobe and make money. Fashion marketplace Shedd is an easy and quick way to sell unwanted items and make room for some new pieces. And by quick, I mean less than 30 seconds quick. Simply snap a photo on your phone and upload with a short description via the app. Download the Shedd app here to start culling your wardrobe and also see what I’m selling!
